The purpose of the Continuous National Ranking (CNC) is to provide an athlete ranking system based on performance at multiple levels of national, continental and world competition. The calculation of the CNC will thus remain consistent from one season to the next and will constitute the basic framework for the selection of athletes.

CNC reasoning
The CNC was created through extensive collaboration/consultation with the following groups:
- Athletes Commission
- Representatives of PTSOs
- High Performance Committee
- Sport Infrastructure Partners (Own the Podium, Sport Canada)
CEC conducted a detailed analysis of Canadian results at the IFSC and national results during the 2016-2020 seasons. This historical data was used to understand and report on the factors that affect results at each level (group strength, group size and level of competition). The resulting CNC calculation includes these factors to best represent relative performance.
The CNC includes the results of the events below:
- National CEC Events (CEC Competitions and High Performance Competitions)
- Continental Events (IFSC Pan Am Series, North American Cup Series)
- International Events (IFSC World Cups, World Championships, Youth World Championships)
- Major Games (Olympics and Pan American Games)
Athlete rankings are updated in real time after each event and will change throughout each competition season. This offers the following advantages:
- Easier to understand (one system that remains consistent from season to season)
- Allows more movement within the HP program providing opportunities for more athletes
- Discourages athlete complacency while encouraging positive internal competition in the HP program
- Provides multiple entry points to the HP program
