CEC is committed to developing Para-Climbing programs and events in 2022. We are excited to announce that the Board of Directors has approved a 2022-2023 Para-Climbing Development Plan.
Our starting point resides with investing in our in-house expertise and leadership. We are currently looking for 3 volunteers to occupy para-climbing leadership roles. Candidates must be available to join the CEC Para-Climbing Committee, and attend the USA Para-Climbing National Championships, on March 26-27, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama. Expenses to attend this event will be covered by CEC, and an honorarium will be paid out when working CEC events.
- Canadian Para-Climbing Classifier (1 position)
- CEC Lead Para-Climbing Routesetter (1 position)
- CEC Lead Para-Climbing Technical Delegate (1 position)

Canadian Para-Climbing Classifier (1 position)
Classification is undertaken to define who is eligible to compete in Para-Climbing competitions; and to group athletes into Sport Classes which aim to ensure that the impact of impairment is minimized and sporting excellence determines which athlete is ultimately victorious.
The roles and responsibilities of the Canadian Classifier will include, but not limited to:
- Have a complete working knowledge of all applicable policies, rules and processes established by the IFSC Classification Rules;
- Use their influence to foster a positive and collaborative Classification attitude and communication;
- Assist in the development, management and implementation of Classification Systems, including participation in education and research;
- Ensure the proper implementation of the Classification process leading up to CEC Para-Climbing Events; and
- Cooperate with any investigations concerning violations of these Classification Rules
The Canadian Classifier must have the following competencies:
- A thorough understanding of Classification Rules;
- An understanding of Sport Climbing, including an understanding of the IFSC Rules;
- An understanding of the Code and the International Standards;
- A professional qualification(s), level of experience, skills and/or competencies in order to act as a Classifier. These include that Classifiers must either:
- Be a certified health professional in a field relevant to the Eligible Impairment category which the CEC at its sole discretion deems acceptable, such as a physician or physiotherapist for Athletes with a Physical Impairment; ophthalmologist or optometrist for Athletes with a Vision Impairment; or
- Have an extensive coaching or other relevant background in the particular sport(s); or a recognized and reputable academic qualification which encompasses a requisite level of anatomical, biomechanical and sport- specific expertise, which the CEC at its sole discretion deems to be acceptable.
- Strong desire to support development of Para-Climbing over the next couple of years.
CEC Lead Para-Climbing Routesetter (1 position)
Setting routes for para-athletes is different from setting routes for able-bodied athletes. The CEC is looking for a Lead Routesetter willing to specialize in Para-Climbing. The Lead Para-Climbing Routesetter will need to understand Setting for Para-Athletes, and be willing to train and mentor Canadian Setters.
The CEC Lead Para-Climbing Routesetter must have the following competencies:
- An understanding of Sport Climbing, including an understanding of the IFSC Rules;
- A thorough understanding of Para-Climbing Routesetting Guidelines;
- 4+ years experience as a Head Setter at National or Provincial Events;
- Strong desire to support development of Para-Climbing over the next couple of years.
CEC Lead Para-Climbing Technical Delegate (1 position)
CEC is aiming at hosting its first ever National Para-Climbing Championships this year. We are seeking an experienced Technical Delegate willing to specialize in Para-Climbing events. This person would be supporting the CEC staff in all aspects related to the competition, from venue selection to registration and schedules.
The CEC Lead Para-Climbing Technical Delegate must have the following qualifications:
- An understanding of Sport Climbing, including an understanding of the IFSC Rules;
- An understanding of accessibility aspect involved in a competition event;
- 4+ years experience as a Technical Delegate at National or Provincial Events;
- Strong desire to support development of Para-Climbing over the next couple of years.
