Sport Climbing Saskatchewan (SCS) and Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC) wish to clarify the qualification pathway for athletes residing in Saskatchewan.
Sport Climbing Saskatchewan (SCS) is a newly incorporated Provincial Sport Organization, established in 2025. While SCS is not yet recognized as an official member of CEC, CEC welcomes the leadership demonstrated by the organization and has integrated SCS into its Provincial/Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO) communication channels. Additional steps remain before SCS can operate as a fully independent, CEC-recognized PTSO, and this work will continue over the coming years.
With the incorporation of SCS, the qualification pathway for CEC National events is being adjusted.
In previous seasons, Saskatchewan’s athlete quota for CEC National Championships was administered through the Alberta Climbing Association (ACA). Saskatchewan athletes competed in ACA events and were ranked alongside Alberta athletes. While Saskatchewan’s quota was reserved for Saskatchewan athletes, ACA quota spots could also be allocated to Saskatchewan athletes if they ranked sufficiently high within the combined rankings.
Beginning this season, CEC will distribute Saskatchewan’s quota directly to Sport Climbing Saskatchewan. SCS will establish its own ranking system for athletes who are members of its organization and will allocate quota spots to the highest-ranked Saskatchewan athletes in each category. As a result, Saskatchewan athletes will no longer be eligible to receive ACA quota spots through ACA rankings.
To establish Saskatchewan rankings during this transition period, Saskatchewan athletes will continue to compete in ACA Youth Provincial events. SCS will use the results achieved by Saskatchewan athletes at these ACA Youth Provincial competitions to generate its provincial rankings. The Alberta Climbing Association will support this process by ensuring Saskatchewan athletes have access to Youth Provincial events and by sharing relevant competition results with the SCS Board.
CEC, SCS, and ACA remain committed to collaborating closely to ensure a clear, fair, and accessible competition pathway for Saskatchewan athletes during this period of organizational development.
